If you are a parent who feels that your child is lazy, unmotivated, disinterested in studies, or unwilling to put in effort, I want you to know this: no child is ever lazy.
Every human being has an innate desire to do well and thrive in life. When a child isn’t doing what is expected of them, there is always a reason behind it. As parents, our role is to understand that reason and provide the support our child needs.
Some common reasons may include:
A learning disorder, such as ADHD
A mental health challenge, such as anxiety or depression
Emotional blockages caused by a disconnect with parents
Difficulty focusing due to a stressful or toxic home environment
What You Need to Do as a Parent
Get your child evaluated for a possible learning disorder
Be alert to signs of mental health challenges and seek support from a mental health professional
Evaluate your home environment—this plays a significant role in your child’s ability to focus and function
If there is a disconnect, start working intentionally on strengthening your connection with your child
4 Things You Should Never Do
Never forget that your child may already be carrying a lot of shame and embarrassment—don’t add to it
Never label your child as lazy or irresponsible
Never threaten or bribe them to study
Don’t fill them with fear about their future, as this only increases anxiety and helplessness
