Phones are designed to be addictive. The connection, validation, and sense of belonging that teens don’t always receive from us, they often seek in the virtual world instead. While taking their phone away may not be realistic, empowering them to use it safely is.

Here are five things you need to start doing:

1. Strengthen your connection with your teenWork intentionally on building a strong relationship with your child so they don’t feel the need to seek unsafe connections or friendships online. A secure connection at home reduces the pull of unhealthy virtual relationships.

2. Create phone-free family timePlan phone-free family evenings where everyone—including parents—puts their phone away and focuses on being together. This helps your child feel a true sense of belonging within their family.

3. Educate through honest conversationsHave open, age-appropriate dialogues about the dangers of connecting with virtual friends or strangers and sharing intimate details of their life online. Education begins with honest, ongoing conversations—not fear.

4. Raise their self-worthSocial media can distort your child’s perception of beauty and contribute to anxiety and body-image issues, especially for young girls. Be your daughter’s role model. Let her see you feeling confident and comfortable in your own body.

5. Be their safe spaceMake the effort to understand their world. Allow them to share freely. Judge less, advise less, and listen more. Be their safe space. Reassure them that there is nothing they cannot share with you.

My mission is to empower you by helping you understand your child better—so you can parent from a place of joy, not helplessness.
